More Thiago Almada Replacement Options

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

Thiago Almada has been a vital player for Atlanta United this season so it is important for the club to have ideas about players to transfer in if he leaves this summer. This potential transfer out of Atlanta has been reported to have drawn the interest of Serie A leaders Napoli who have said that they are close to signing the Argentine. This is unlikely, though, as it is common for teams to play mind games and lie about transfer negotiations and Fabrizio Romano confirmed Napoli's interest in the midfielder but said that Almada wasn't close to signing. Napoli aside, he will, in all likelihood, go somewhere in Europe so these are more players that Atlanta could look at signing this summer.

Giorgian De Arrascaeta

Arrascaeta is a really fun player who can operate in between the midfield and defensive lines and has had lots of success in South America. The 28 year old is also an Uruguay international with 42 appearances since 2014 registering 10 goals in that time. This includes two World Cups with the midfielder scoring twice in the 2022 World Cup, Uruguay's only two goals in a win over Ghana. Arrascaeta is a fully proven player who won't come to Atlanta for cheap but is worth possibly signing as there aren't a lot of questions about his ability. He is, however, currently struggling with a groin injury that is set to see him out until mid to late May.

Mauricio

CaughtOffside.com

Mauricio is a 21 year old attacking midfielder for Internacional who has put up good stats in attacking midfielder and right winger roles since joining the club in November 2020. He is a dangerous player who has been successful in getting into dangerous positions, generating a combined average 0.49 non-penalty xG and expected assists per game, putting him in the 91st percentile of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Brazilian top flight.

Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo is a very exciting prospect. The 18 year old is fairly unproven as he has only played in 41 matches for the Flamengo senior team, despite this his stats are incredible. The Brazilian is in the 80+ percentile for non-penalty goals and xG, assists and expected assists, progressive carries, successful take-ons, touches in the attacking box, and progressive passes received (all per 90). These last 4 stats are what I am really excited about as it shows that he is a creative player who isn't only willing to make plays in the box but is successful in doing so, too. Goal also recently wrote an article about him.

Calebe

Calebe is a 22 year old attacking midfielder for Fortaleza. The Brazilian signed for them this February after winning the Brazilian Serie A with Atletico MG. Calebe is a cheaper option who has had some trouble earning a sure place in Fortaleza's starting 11 despite registering a goal in their match yesterday.

Zaracho is a 25 year old Argentine who is currently playing for Atletico MG. He is an attacking midfielder or right winger who is far more proven that many of the other potential transfer targets. He is valued at 12 million euros by Transfermarkt and has firmly earned himself a starting role for the Atletico. While he doesn't have outstanding goal and assist stats he clearly is an effective presser with great defensive stats. This makes him an interesting transfer target as he is far more proven than many of the other players and has a different playstyle, too.
